Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi) — A Thousand-Year Legend in the Heart of the Bosphorus

The Maiden’s Tower is one of Istanbul’s timeless symbols and one of Türkiye’s most popular historic attractions. Standing on a small islet in the waters of the Bosphorus opposite Üsküdar, this legendary tower has blended history, legend and love for centuries.

History and Background

The Maiden’s Tower dates back more than 1,600 years. The first structure on the site was built in 410 AD on the orders of the Athenian general Alcibiades. At the time, the tower served as a checkpoint and military watchtower controlling ship traffic on the Bosphorus.

In the Byzantine era the building was known as Leandros Tower, and under the Ottomans it was rebuilt and renovated several times. Over its history the tower has served many purposes: lighthouse, customs and ship-inspection station, quarantine station during plague outbreaks, and finally a romantic and touristic symbol of Istanbul.

The most recent major restoration was completed in recent years, and today, with its historic character preserved, the tower operates as a museum and waterfront café-restaurant.

Architecture and Features

The 23-metre-high Maiden’s Tower, with several stone and wooden floors, stands in the centre of an islet only a few dozen square metres in size.

Its highlight is a 360-degree terrace offering a stunning view of both sides of the city — Istanbul’s Asian and European shores.

Other floors host exhibitions of historic artefacts, paintings related to the tower’s legends and old photographs of Istanbul.

How to Get There

From Üsküdar (Salacak pier): on the Asian side, small boats take visitors to the island every few minutes (less than 10 minutes’ ride).

From Kabataş pier: on the European side, you can also reach the tower by excursion boat.

Atmosphere and Experience

The Maiden’s Tower is not just a historic building but a symbol of love, loyalty and the passage of time — a place from which Istanbul shows a different face from every angle: sometimes legendary, sometimes poetic, and always beautiful.
