Beşiktaş, Istanbul — The Beating Heart of European Istanbul
Beşiktaş is one of Istanbul’s oldest, liveliest and most cultural districts, located on the European shore of the Bosphorus. This historic, popular area blends modern city life, Ottoman history, local markets and youthful cafés, and has always been a favourite of both visitors and locals.
History and Geography
Beşiktaş has long been an important part of Istanbul and was known as a small harbour in the Byzantine era. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople the area flourished thanks to its proximity to the imperial palaces and the Bosphorus.
The name “Beşiktaş” means “cradle stone” in Turkish; according to tradition, it comes from a stone kept here that was associated with the baptism of Jesus.
It borders Sarıyer and Şişli to the north, Beyoğlu to the south and the Bosphorus to the east, and is one of the main connection points between the Asian and European sides of the city.
Sights and Attractions in Beşiktaş
Dolmabahçe Palace: the area’s most important historic symbol and one of the most magnificent Ottoman buildings in Istanbul. Built in the 19th century, it was the residence of the last six Ottoman sultans and of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Beşiktaş Pier (Beşiktaş İskelesi): one of Istanbul’s busiest piers, with ferry connections to the Asian side (Üsküdar and Kadıköy). The area around the pier is full of seaside cafés and the smell of fresh tea.
Beşiktaş Market (Beşiktaş Çarşısı): a traditional, energetic market full of shops selling spices, clothes, souvenirs and local food. In its alleys you can taste some of Istanbul’s most famous döner and kumpir.
Beşiktaş Square (Beşiktaş Meydanı): the lively heart of the district and a gathering place for locals, students and football fans. An Atatürk memorial statue stands at its centre, and the square is always full of life and street music.
Yıldız Park (Yıldız Parkı): one of Istanbul’s largest green parks, between Beşiktaş and Ortaköy. Once part of the imperial gardens, it is now a lovely place for picnics and walks among ancient trees.
Beşiktaş stadium (Vodafone Park): the modern home of Beşiktaş football club, one of Türkiye’s most popular teams. Even if you are not a football fan, a visit to the stadium area is an interesting experience.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle
Beşiktaş is an energetic neighbourhood with a youthful, student atmosphere. Its proximity to well-known universities (such as Yıldız Technical University and Bahçeşehir University) keeps its many cafés and restaurants full of life.
By day the sound of boats, and by night live music from the seaside cafés, reveal a different side of Istanbul.
