Turkish higher education institutions are strengthening their international standing, with 23 of the country’s universities ranked among the top 500 in the QS European University Rankings 2026.
According to Türkiye’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the success of the country’s higher education system continues at an unprecedented pace. Following notable results in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Turkish universities have also outperformed a number of their European peers in the latest QS assessments. With 36 new institutions added, a total of 103 Turkish universities now appear in the European ranking.
This leap marks a historic milestone, making Türkiye the second most represented country in European higher education. By number of ranked institutions, Türkiye has now overtaken long-established university systems such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Middle East Technical University (METU) remains the flagship of Turkish higher education, ranking 116th among 958 universities from 42 countries.
With the highest scores in academic reputation, employer reputation and international research network, METU holds first place nationally. Alongside METU, Istanbul Technical University (124th), Boğaziçi University (153rd), Bilkent University (182nd) and Hacettepe University (199th) are also in the top 200. Turkish universities maintain a strong presence in the top 500, with Istanbul University ranked 226th and Ankara University 244th.
Yıldız Technical University ranks 264th and Gazi University 286th. Beyond rising academic rankings, Türkiye has consolidated its position as one of the world’s leading destinations for higher education and is now the eighth-largest host of international students worldwide. According to a recent report by the Federation of International Student Associations (UDEF) and the ILKE Foundation, the number of international students in the country has changed dramatically over the past decade, rising from 70,000 to around 350,000.
This growth is in line with the national strategic goal of hosting one million international students, pursued on the basis of high-quality education and Türkiye’s “human-centred” cultural approach. The report stresses that religious affinity and educational quality remain the most important motivations for foreign students, and 61% of them study at state universities across the country.
