Under a new strategy, Türkiye and the United States are working to achieve their long-standing goal of raising bilateral trade to USD 100 billion.
The new approach focuses on strengthening cooperation in strategic sectors such as home appliances, textiles, automotive, tourism, technology, nuclear energy and others. It builds on earlier efforts by the Turkish-American Business Council (TAİK) of Türkiye’s Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK), which, together with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), published a comprehensive report in 2019 and 2020 setting out a path to this ambitious goal. Prepared under the project “Developing Trade Relations between the Turkish and US Private Sectors”, the report provided a detailed roadmap for expanding bilateral trade.
Updating the roadmap for new global conditions
Given global economic volatility and shifting international trade trends, the report is now being revised to reflect new realities and emerging opportunities. Private-sector representatives from both countries have been invited to share their views and proposals. The new roadmap will highlight priority sectors including home appliances, textiles, ready-made clothing, automotive, shipbuilding, tourism, technology, electronics, nuclear energy and cooperation in third countries, while identifying target US states as key markets.
Türkiye–US trade figures
According to the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), Türkiye’s exports to the US last year included USD 856 million of ready-made clothing and textiles, USD 774.1 million of electronics and USD 38.8 million of ships and yachts. Automotive exports rose 18.9% year on year to USD 1.2 billion.
According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), Türkiye’s total exports to the US in 2024 rose 9.9% to USD 16.4 billion, and total bilateral trade reached USD 32.6 billion. In the same period, Türkiye recorded a trade surplus of USD 124.9 million with the US.
Mutual investment and outlook
The US is Türkiye’s second-largest export market and fifth-largest source of imports. Turkish companies have invested USD 13.2 billion in the US so far, while US companies’ investment in Türkiye has reached USD 15.7 billion. More than 2,000 US companies currently operate in Türkiye, and mutual investment flows continue to grow.
