At a meeting of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Transport Coordination Centre (UKOME), a decision was taken to make cameras mandatory in all school transport vehicles.
The meeting, held at the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Centre (AKOM) in Eyüpsultan and chaired by IMM deputy secretary general Pelin Alpkökin, discussed the requirement to equip school vehicles with cameras. Taxis, minibuses and dolmuş taxis are already fitted with cameras connected to the public transport monitoring and management centre, and it was proposed that school transport vehicles be added to this system.
Accordingly, an amendment to Article 1 of the School Transport Vehicles Regulation was requested as follows: “School transport vehicles must be equipped with interior and exterior cameras and recording devices covering all seats, in line with the technical, equipment, installation and operating requirements of the Traffic Regulation and the Regulation on the Manufacture, Modification and Assembly of Vehicles.” The requirement was approved unanimously and, as planned, will take effect from 2026 once the signing procedures are completed.
