With the launch of its first 5G-supported smart road in Istanbul, Türkiye has taken an important step towards next-generation transport. The pilot project is designed to improve traffic safety, increase efficiency and raise driver awareness through real-time data integration.
The Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) project runs along a 40 km corridor from the Hasdal junction to Istanbul Airport.
The route is the country’s first comprehensive, real-world deployment of intelligent transport systems under live traffic conditions.
The system relies on a combination of 5G and fibre-optic infrastructure that enables dynamic communication between vehicles and roadside infrastructure. Through this network, drivers receive instant, location-specific alerts and notices about road conditions, traffic and the environment.
Potential hazards — including accidents, stopped vehicles, icy road surfaces, objects and debris on the road, or lane closures — are detected in real time and immediately communicated to road users.
The smart road brings together a range of advanced technologies, including cameras, roadside sensors, AI-based image processing, incident detection systems, weather data integration and variable message signs.
